Powerball $516 million jackpot for October 10, 2026: the cash option is estimated at $212.6M before taxes. Why big jackpots raise the risk of sharing a prize.

The Powerball $516 million jackpot is the estimated prize for the draw on Saturday, October 10, 2026. The winner would not receive that sum, though: the cash option is estimated at $212.6 million, before taxes. The amount changes nothing about the probability of winning, which stays at 1 in 292,201,338. What it does change is the number of players, and so the risk of sharing a prize.

The draw is scheduled for 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time, which is 3:59 a.m. on Sunday, October 11 in the UK (Powerball, Lottopark). The amounts quoted here are estimates published before the draw: they can move with ticket sales.

The real jackpot: $516 million or $212.6 million?

The advertised jackpot is not the sum paid out at once. The winner can choose the lump sum, the cash option, which is much lower. For this draw, Powerball and Lottopark give about $212.6 million.

The arithmetic is simple: 212.6 ÷ 516 = 0.412. The cash option is therefore about 41% of the advertised amount.

That $212.6 million is a gross figure, before taxes. The deductions come after.

What taxes really take

On lottery winnings above $5,000, the US tax authority (IRS) requires federal withholding of 24% (IRS). For a sum of this size, the winner then falls under the top federal marginal rate of 37%, which means the 24% withholding does not cover all the federal tax owed (NBC Washington).

Here is an order of magnitude, applied to the $212.6 million cash option (simplified calculation, federal tax only, no state taxes):

  • 24% withholding: 212.6 × 0.24 ≈ $51.0 million, leaving about $161.6 million;
  • if 37% applied to the whole amount: 212.6 × 0.37 ≈ $78.7 million, leaving about $133.9 million.

The amount actually received would depend on the winner's situation and on the state where the ticket was bought. Keep the gap in mind: between the $516 million advertised and the final sum, more than half is missing.

Bar chart: on the $212.6 million cash option, the 24% federal withholding leaves $161.6 million. If the top federal marginal rate of 37% is applied, $133.9 million remains before state taxes.

Why big jackpots attract more tickets

At the draw on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the numbers were 11, 13, 14, 21, 65 and Powerball 19 (Power Play 2x). No ticket won the jackpot, or the $1 million Match 5 prize (Powerball, USA Mega).

The last jackpot was won on August 12, 2026 in Illinois, for $1.04 billion (Illinois Lottery). Since then, the October 10 draw will be the 25th: 24 draws in a row with no winner, from August 15 to October 7. The jackpot has rolled over each time and keeps growing.

A nine-figure amount makes the headlines and pushes occasional players to buy a ticket. The more tickets there are, the more likely it is that several winning lines coincide and the prize is split. Wisenum has no sales figure for this draw, so we do not put a number on it. The mechanism is explained in our article on large jackpots and sharing risk.

What the amount does not change: the probability of winning the jackpot is 1 in 292,201,338 for each line (Powerball). With three draws a week (156 a year) and one line per draw, it would take on average about 1.87 million years to get there (292,201,338 ÷ 156 ≈ 1,873,000). The prize tiers and their probabilities are detailed on the Powerball odds page.

The takeaway

  • The advertised $516 million is an estimate, not the sum paid out at once. The estimated cash option is $212.6 million, about 41% of the total, before taxes.
  • The initial 24% federal withholding is not the end of it: the rate can reach 37%, before any state taxes.
  • The probability of winning stays at 1 in 292,201,338, whatever the amount. A big jackpot draws more players, so it increases the risk of sharing the prize.
  • Every combination has the same probability of being drawn. The only real lever is sharing: playing a line few players have picked does not change the probability of winning, but it reduces the risk of splitting the prize.

Frequently asked questions

What is the real amount of the October 10, 2026 Powerball jackpot?

The advertised $516 million jackpot is an estimate, not the sum paid out at once. The cash option is estimated at $212.6 million, about 41% of the advertised total. That amount is before taxes.

How much tax would be withheld on a Powerball win?

The US tax authority (IRS) requires federal withholding of 24% on lottery winnings. For a sum of this size, the winner falls under the top federal marginal rate of 37%, which means the 24% withholding does not cover all the federal tax owed. State taxes would come on top, depending on location.

Do big jackpots make winning more likely?

No. The probability of winning the Powerball jackpot always stays at 1 in 292,201,338, whatever the amount. A big jackpot does not change the probability of winning it, but it draws more players, which increases the risk that the prize is shared between several winners.

What really changes when the jackpot is huge?

What mainly changes is the number of players. A nine-figure amount makes the headlines and pushes occasional players to buy a ticket. With more tickets in circulation, it is more likely that several winning lines coincide and that the prize is split between several winners.

Every valid combination has the same probability of being drawn. Wisenum does not predict winning numbers.
